There was a discussion the other day about knitting - not the process but what happens to the finished product. The question...is it better that the piece you've spent hours working on (literally hours), days selecting just the right yarn, agony over the perfect pattern, heartache and frustration during creation, is this thing supposed to be used, or is it supposed to sit pristine in a drawer for "special" occasions and as a heirloom.
Don't get me wrong both scenarios mean the piece is loved and cherished. I guess the question is personal to the knitter. So the situation went like this...layed out in front of you are 22 pairs of mittens at a guild meeting, you're supposed to choose the best pair and award a prize. They are all lovely, they are all made with care and attention. 21 pairs are brand spanking new, never been out of the cabin except on the way to guild. The 22nd pair - well they are beautiful, they were knit for a 6 year old girl, you can still see her chubby little fingers because she wore them so much they felted to the shape of her hand, the lace at the cuff has been caught a couple of times on the swings, these mittens - these mittens screamed LOVE! Love by the owner, love by the knitter - I swear to god - love by the sheep. They made my heart ache. So do you award the prize to the technically perfect and stunning multicolor latvian mittens, or do you pick the 22nd pair?
